Be habitually decisive and confident in your decisions
Friday Jul 26, 2019
Friday Jul 26, 2019
Ep #14 - In this weeks episode, we discuss principle #3 - Decisiveness.
Being decisive is crucial in life because we can often get stuck in the paradox of choice - too many options so we pick none.
Decisiveness is the ability to make a clear choice when presented with many options, yes, and it’s also the practice of moving forward with your decision with confidence and getting the most from the experience the decision affords you.
Making the decision then wondering if you should have chosen differently the whole time you are doing whatever it is you chose to do is not being decisive.
Make a choice and let it play out while you give it 100% of your effort all the way through. Do not stop a month in because it feels uncomfortable and scary.
Discomfort is a signal you are growing, learning something new, and most likely the result of you truly becoming the person college will influence you to become.
You're in college, try new things out. You want to be a vegan, be a vegan. Then be a pescatarian, then a vegetarian - hell, eat only raw meat, under a pale moonlight, in the woods, if you want.
You can make those decisions, just make them and move forward with the confidence you can always make another decision later.

Be courageous and live outside your comfort shell.
Thursday Jul 18, 2019
Thursday Jul 18, 2019
Ep #13 - In this weeks episode we discuss principle #2 - Courage.
With an open mind, you can achieve the life of your dreams but you have to possess the courage it will take to step into the life college is there to evolve you toward.
Everything you want in life is at your fingertips, around the corner, but you must reach for it, you must keep moving or you will awake one day with a life of regret instead of fond memories and life experiences (remember this is no failure only feedback) under your belt.
Courage is essential in life because if you lack it, then you will also lack self-awareness, self-confidence, self-esteem, and so much more.
Everyone is afraid of something, that is a fact. It’s how one faces that fear, manages that fear, deals with that fear, and begins to overcome that fear - that speaks volumes about their courageousness and their character.
If you call yourself a perfectionist or if you procrastinate as a default behavior you are living in a state of fear, and most certainly lacking courage.
As we progress through the next five principles look for ideas and inspiration to push through perfectionism and procrastination and actually get to the job at hand.
- Step through the fear of social awkwardness.
- Be grounded in the idea that not everyone will like you but a lot will.
- Be who you want to be and be around the people you want to be around not just the people that want you around because you act like they want you to act.
- If you feel fear coming through you ask yourself why you feel that fear, where is the source of the fear, and how can you overcome the fear?
- In my experience, just going through the act that is bringing you fear will relieve most of the fear.
- You know you have done this in other areas of your life. Go back to a time when you overcame a fear. What were you doing? How did you do to overcome the fear?

Develop an open-mind for maximum growth
Friday Jul 12, 2019
Friday Jul 12, 2019
Ep #12 - In this weeks episode we discuss principle #1 - Open-mindedness.
College is a taste test for the "real world." A growth mindset is the key that will unlock every door you come across in your collegiate journey as well as your life. A growth or fixed mindset can be present in any area of your life. You must be conscious of the self-talk, the limitations you hold yourself to, and be able to navigate through them to achieve what you desire in college and life.
Once you learn more about growth mindset, you will begin to see it, and especially the fixed mindset, all around you. On TV, the internet, social media, friends, family, yourself - mindset is the foundation in which all of everything is built, and it is your choice in how you approach every situation and the perspective you experience it through.
Perception is your reality. In this episode, we dive into your mindset in order to maximize your potential.

Harness these 7 Principles for College & Life Success
Friday Jul 05, 2019
Friday Jul 05, 2019
Ep #11 - These 7 Principles govern the filter I use to monitor my daily and life activities. Having your own list is paramount to your college & life success. It is through this filter you can determine if you are moving toward or away from your goals and intended outcomes.
This list is the foundation for my College Success Habits book that will release in the Fall of 2019.
1. Open-Minded: do you have a growth mindset or fixed mindset in your abilities?
2. Courageous: do you step through fear?
3. Decisive: do you stand strong by your decisions and experience all that is being offered to you?
4. Action Taker: do you take action on your decisions and get to the experiencing right away?
5. Discipline: do you set up structure that bypasses willpower?
6. Flexibility: can you ebb and flow with the experience or are you rigid and stuck to the original plan or thought?
7. Tenacity: do you show up - Every. Single. Day.
These 7 priniples will be the bases for the next seven episodes as together we discuss how they are intricately woven into our lives and mastering them will give you the advantage over others in your field and life.

Melissa Wilson on the Power of Time
Friday Jun 28, 2019
Friday Jun 28, 2019
Ep #10 - Today, I am joined by Melissa Wilson, M.Ed., to discuss keys to success for current college students. Melissa is an academic advisor for the nursing division at IUPUC (Indiana University—Purdue University Columbus).
Through Melissa's experience advising and guiding college students, she has put together three keys that we discuss in depth during this interview.
Here are the three keys for college success from Melissa Wilson:
Key #1 - Focus on time management, especially with online courses.
Key #2 - Establish communication with your instructors and teacher's aides on campus.
Key #3 - Create and maintain a strong campus connection.
Melissa believes that successful students have learned to plan and mange their time appropriately. We discuss the strategies that students use to track their schedules along with whether it is preferred to use an online versus a physical calendar.
For those of you taking online classes, we devote a section of our discussion to habits and behaviors that will help improve the probability of success with distance learning.
Whether you are an online student, an in-person student, or a combo of each, we also talk about ways of creating a campus connection and why it is important to do so.
All of this and more will be discussed in this powerful interview so make sure to listen to the episode in its entirety. Enjoy!

How to Effectively Utilize Social Media
Friday Jun 21, 2019
Friday Jun 21, 2019
Ep #09 - In today's episode of College Success Habits, we will be discussing habit structure and creation around your cell phone and social media use. Cell phones are tricky because they are powerful tools when used with proper intention and they can be massive time wasters when used at random. The same can be said for social media. Social media opens up new doors for relationship building and creates opportunities, but it can also eat up your time and leave you wondering where your day went.
I have a question for you. How can you control your phone so that it doesn't control you? In my analysis of this, I have identified three keys to follow so that you remain in control over your phone and social media use.
Key #1 - Know why you're getting on your phone and have a clear intention. Another way to think about this is to always have a purpose for using your phone.
Key #2 - Set time during the day to go off the grid.
Key #3 - Utilize social media in an intentional and mindful way.
For many people, the phone is a distraction that may keep them from being their most productive self. This is why bringing awareness to your phone habits and the time you spend on it can be critical to your success at college and in life.
With social media in particular, I have a few strategies to employ which can help you stay on task and prevent wasting time.
- Figure out the top 2 or 3 social media apps that you want to use.
- When accessing social media, go directly to profiles that you want to visit and avoid randomly scrolling through your feed.
- Be wary of using multiple app that do the same thing like HouseParty, WhatsApp, and Slack. Using all of these apps simultaneously just wastes time. Try to consolidate your chat activities to a single app if possible.
- When you join a club or association on campus, figure out which social media app they want to use and keep everyone on a single app. Simplicity saves time and makes it easier for everyone to stay connected without missing messages.
When you use your phone with intention and purpose, you will have a huge advantage over others that do not. Staying in control of your cell phone usage habits will set you up for college success. Enjoy the episode and let me know your thoughts on the subject.

Friday Jun 07, 2019
Ep # 07 - Welcome back to another edition of the College Success Habits podcast. In today's discussion, I will be reviewing the prior episode's interview with Gretchen Potts and I'm going to break down each of her 4 learning styles that she revealed on that show. If you have not yet listened to the prior episode, I would highly recommend you go back and catch up before listening.
As a brief review, Gretchen Potts named 4 learning styles which were as follows: (1) The No Fear, (2) The Procrastinator, (3) The Spinner / The Overthinker, and (4) The Vision Squanderer.
Today, I will be describing these four learning styles in detail and clearing up any questions that may be lingering. Self-awareness is an important factor in creating college success habits and when you can recognize your particular learning style, you can then make the appropriate adjustments that will help you reach maximum efficiency.
