Friday Jan 03, 2020
Friday Jan 03, 2020
Ep #34 - In this week's episode we discuss beliefs, values, and attitudes and how they are tied to our sense of self and, most importantly, they will morph and evolve throughout college and life.
- Beliefs are assumptions and convictions we hold to be true based on past experiences.
- Values are worthy ideas based on things, concepts and people. Behaviors are how these internalized systems (attitudes, beliefs, and values) are expressed.
- Attitudes are a construct of internal beliefs and value systems.

How our memories become the foundation for our beliefs & values
Friday Dec 27, 2019
Friday Dec 27, 2019
Ep #33 - In this week's episode we discuss how we internalize our life and our experiences. These memories become the building blocks for our belief and values systems throughout our lives.
What we discuss:
How are we processing our external, main life events?
How our beliefs in life stem from our interpretation of past life events: how good we are, our role in the world, skilled enough, loveable enough, good looking enough, what people have said about us, or how they have treated us.
Empowerment in life comes via responsibility
No one in life can make me feel anything; I am responsible for my own emotions.
Mental filtering: how we perceive the information, person, etc. will determine our mindset about what we're experiencing.
- Generalizations
- Deletions
- Distortions
1. Generalizations: the characteristics of one person gets prescribed to all of them
2. Deletions: imperfect people (all of us) will conveniently remember the bad/hurtful things done to us and we will delete what we are doing to others.
3. Distortions: jumping to an assumption or presumption. Reacting to our perception of reality and not reality itself. Distorting what others say and do. When we look at life this way we might think we are broken, but we are not.
All 3 impact how we perceive our reality thus the stories we tell ourselves about the events that occur - good, bad, right, wrong - all based on how we react or others react to what we have done.

Your identity is what you repeatedly do
Friday Dec 20, 2019
Friday Dec 20, 2019
Ep #32 - In this week's episode we discuss how your habits and what you consistently do become the foundation for your identity. I wouldn't call this show "College Success Habits" if I didn't think that the right habits determine success.
Your identity is what you repeatedly do. So if you get up on time, are organized for class, and arrive on time - then you could identify as a prepared student. If you wake up late, are unorganized for class, and arrive late - then you could identify yourself as an unprepared student. If you do this or countless other things, positive or negative, then they will make up the foundation for your identity - and will have great effect on the energy you put out into the world and that drives you.
We cover:
We are limiting ourselves in our lives because we are not using the right identity.
Start with whom you aspire to be and shift your identity to meet that aspiration.
Behavior, feelings, and identity - how shifting in which order you place these will radically alter your reality and sense of self.
A Strong sense of self drives the show
Who are you committed to being?
"Whether you think you can or think you can't you are right"
"It is not because things are difficult that you do not dare; its because you do not dare that things are difficult." - Lucious

Organize your life for the best year yet
Friday Dec 13, 2019
Friday Dec 13, 2019
Ep #31 - In this week's episode we discuss a life organizational structure I developed that allows us to break down our lives in such a way that we can easily see where we are growing in the right direction and where we could use some attention.
My program, Life's Blueprint, is based on the three spheres: Career, Self, and Relationships and the four components of each: Physical, Emotional, Mental, and Spiritual. This equates to twelve quadrants - or rooms in your house of life. School is the career sphere for those in college. Of course, it can be both college and work too - regardless if you are a traditional or non-traditional student.
I have realized everything in life can be categorized into these three spheres. When you organize your life in this manner you can quickly see where it is you are needing to put more effort into your growth. I discovered this at the beginning of my sobriety when I was trying to figure out why I felt great about certain areas of my life but not so great in other areas.
By compartmentalizing your life into these twelve quadrants you will better adapt your focus to what is really dragging on you and also be able to pat yourself on the back because you can easily identify where you are "winning" at school and life.
Career
Physical, Emotional, Mental, Spiritual
Self
Physical, Emotional, Mental, Spiritual
Relationships
Physical, Emotional, Mental, Spiritual

Closing the semester strong through reflection
Thursday Dec 05, 2019
Thursday Dec 05, 2019
Ep #30 - In this week's episode we discuss closing out the semester through reflection.
You're wrapping up the semester and it's time to say goodbye to your friends, classmates, dorm, greek house, maybe the professors, and the campus as a whole.
What will you do to signify the end of this portion of your journey? Put some effort into taking stock of the pros and cons of this semester so you can figure out where you would like to do it better next term.
How to end a semester strong:
- how will you remember it?
- taking time to remember everything you liked and didn't like about this semester will become great notes going into the next semester so you know where you can better focus your energy and where you feel comfortable.
- will you journal? audio recordings? video recordings?
What do you need to wrap up before it's over?
How will you say goodbye to the campus?

Maximize your success when preparing and studying for finals
Friday Nov 29, 2019
Friday Nov 29, 2019
Ep #29 - In this weeks episode we discuss prepping for the finals and end of term exams.
It is imperative you take the time to really understand the workload & flow:
- accomplishing things with higher efficiency when you have an outline, schedule, and workflow chart
**Pomodoro Technique**
- how do you want to study?
- small chunks, medium chunks, long chunks
- super huge chunks will kill the drive to keep going and halt memory absorption of the material
Understand the parameters of the work needing to get done so you have an idea of how to break it up and schedule it.
- Create your own study guide.
- Attend the review session.
- Create a study schedule - and follow it. (gym time story
- Get creative with study aids. (Read aloud, record yourself explaining it to yourself, flashcards, note cards, etc)
- Prioritize your study time.
- Remove all distractions and avoid multitasking.
Study for the style of the exam.
- Multiple-choice: know definitions and concepts.
- Essay exams: focus on understanding the concepts presented and have examples to use.)
Pace yourself.
- Make sure you stay focused and don’t burn yourself out. Stay away from the dreaded all-nighter through pacing. You can easily do this by starting early, creating a study schedule, and taking breaks frequently.
Teach classmates.
- Learning by teaching is a method that really works! If you work with a study buddy or group and explain concepts to each another, you're re-learning the material all over again. It's a great way to reinforce what you've learned.
I love this method and use it in my podcasts and Facebook and Instagram lives.
Brain food is real.
- Eat healthily and drink plenty of water to keep your brain firing on all cylinders.
****GET PLENTY OF REST AND SLEEP!!!***

Thriving through the emotions of going home for the holidays
Friday Nov 22, 2019
Friday Nov 22, 2019
Ep #28 - In this week's episode we discuss going home for Thanksgiving, and soon Christmas, and how to best handle, cope, and thrive with the emotions that present themselves during this loving, yet often stressful, time of the year.
You have changed, grown, learned new things - and this can butt heads with the "old way" that awaits you back home. It is imperative that you both: share what you have learned and understand those back home have not experienced what you have over the last semester, year, etc.
Do you want to be right, or do you want to connect? How you discuss your new ideas, behaviors, beliefs, values, and attitudes will speak volumes on how growth-minded you truly are and your willingness to meet your relatives and friends where they are at in their lives.
You have been attending and living in a place of upward movement and (hopefully) growth-minded and open-minded people. This has not changed the people back home, nor has it changed the environment you came from. How you present yourself to them will go far in how easily they can adjust and learn from this "new you."
Home for the holidays:
- you go from freedom to having parents around again
- rules
- curfew
- behavior
- habits
- attitude
Your parents have gotten used to a new norm
- empty nest
- noise level
- food consumption
- cleanliness

Is your mindset holding you back?
Friday Nov 15, 2019
Friday Nov 15, 2019
Ep #27 - In this week's episode we will be talking about limiting beliefs, limiting mindset, and fixed mindset. For you longtime listeners, you will be familiar with my thoughts on this topic. For you newbies, this is a great way to learn how I use positive inner language and a growth mindset to push myself to heights unimaginable just a few years ago - and in most cases, just a few months or weeks ago.
I will cover:
Why is identifying a limiting mindset important?
What is a limiting mindset?
How to identify a limiting mindset?
What if you can't get out of your limiting mindset? (Which itself is a limiting belief.)
Understanding the Importance of making the change, gaining the Confidence to know how to make the change, and determining your Readiness to make the change are crucial in your longterm success - and that's what I will help you discover about yourself in this episode.

Four mistakes to make if you wanna live in fear and not be yourself.
Friday Nov 08, 2019
Friday Nov 08, 2019
Ep #26 - In this weeks episode I take a comedic spin on how not to discover who it is you are in this world. Growing up can be confusing and it's not helped by all the judging we do to ourselves and to others. Make these four mistakes and you are guaranteed to not live your best life and to wake up one day and wonder how you became a person you didn't want to be.
Ignore self discovery in favor of conformity.
Ignore moral, ethical, and integrity based decision making in favor of doing what ever you want in order to crush the opposition and always get ahead.
Only do what you are already comfortable doing.
Stress out and freak out all the time.
Have these behaviors and you will not live your best life - just saying.

Create your own career path in life
Friday Nov 01, 2019
Friday Nov 01, 2019
Ep #25 - In this episode, I will discuss "flipping the script" that the education system has raised you in so you can all take control of your career path and become the best version of yourself.
Go check out Ted Talk - Flip the Script -Blake Mallen to gain perspective on the script the education system has raised us under and to better understand why it is imperative you take control of your own journey.
Are you a "Traditionalist," a "Rebel," or a "Creator?"
There is a script - first is was to raise farmers then it was to raise factory workers. This script doesn't work in our society anymore and our education system hasn't developed a new script. Well, in a way, it is developing a service industry workforce and that is not enough to bring our society closer to the "American Dream."
