Fight, flight, freeze, or sex
Friday Jun 12, 2020
Friday Jun 12, 2020
Ep #52 - In this week's episode we dive into the fight, flight, freeze, or sex (it's technically called the 4 F's) of the human response system known as the amygdala and it's corresponding opposite - the cerebral cortex or cognitive thinking center of the brain.
Why are we getting into this? So you can look around you and see who is operating emotionally triggered versus emotionally centered? Well, yeah, I want you to be able to do that. More importantly, I would like to introduce you to why you behave the way you do after an emotional trauma - such as a break-up.
I am getting into a book on abandonment and it is an eye opener. Heartbreak is pretty much inevitable at some point in your lifetime and college is ripe for it. Understanding that emotionally reacting is a human conditioned response, and not something to be ashamed of, is particularly great to know because beating yourself up for having emotions is a horrible way to go through life - let alone college.
If you would like to know more about the abandonment book I am working through here's the link.

Patience is your behavior and attitude while waiting
Saturday May 23, 2020
Saturday May 23, 2020
Ep #51 - In this week's episode we discuss patience. Something our society has shown great amounts of during the quarantine and yet, we could still have a better attitude and behaviors surrounding the Q and in life in general.
We will dive into why patience is important, what patience truly is, how to be patient - and what happens if we don't show patience is circumstances that aren't always in our control.
Spoiler alert - the power you have over any and everything that happens in your life lies in your response to it, rather than an emotionally triggered reaction.

Learn how you learn best
Thursday May 14, 2020
Thursday May 14, 2020
Ep 50, In this weeks episode, we talk about the learning styles of visual, auditory, and kinesthetic.
- If you are visual you might prefer to see handouts, read, take colorful notes, and doodle during class.
- If you lean toward auditory then you learn well from lectures, talking about the material, podcasts, and audiobooks.
- If you are a kinesthetic learner then you like to get your hands dirty, experiment, actually do something physical with the material - maybe a field trip or museum visit to really immerse yourself in the information.
The way you learn is paramount to understand as the governments begin to decide on Fall campus openings. If you know how you learn then you can accommodate your studying and such to that strength specifically.
Your response to the quarantine will have longterm implications on your future. There is a ton of uncertainty in the country and world right now. You can always count on yourself though. You can be certain that if you acquire the right tools and if you keep motivated and disciplined then your best will rise to the surface.
You can't be certain of the outcome but you can be certain of your effort.

The First Year Experience w/ Jessica Cerda
Friday Apr 10, 2020
Friday Apr 10, 2020
Ep #47 - In this week's episode, I welcome Los Angeles City College's First-Year Experience program director Jessica Cerda to the show. We discuss how to manage your time, handle the stressors college inevitably heaps upon you, and how, no matter the campus, there is help and assistance in the form of: counselors, therapists, advisors, etc. available to guide you through the maze that is the college experience.
While this was recorded before the novel coronavirus and subsequent quarantine took over our society, I still think what Jessica talks about is relevant as there are tens of thousands of high school students about to embark on the amazing journey that is college. There are equally as many students that have had their first year experiences halted as it was just gaining momentum - and I think all of you in the early stages of your university life will have some massive catching up to do when the schools reopen in the fall (fingers-crossed.)
Here's my best wishes that all of you make it through this healthy and without the loss of a loved one. Be ready for next semester because things will return to some semblance of normalcy at some point and you want to have momentum in hand rather than starting from a stand still.
